Xavier’s current work focuses on the application of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from veterinary species (horses, cattle) to generate clinically relevant cell lineages (with a focus on mesenchymal precursor cells) as well as novel in vitro models of disease. In particular, through the combined use of iPSCs and gene editing technologies (CRISPRs), his group seeks to elucidate the role of specific genes and gene mutations in the pathogenesis of specific neuronal and muscular disease in horses, as well as identify the determinants of infectious disease resistance to in cattle.
