Dr Siddharthan Chandran

Director of The Euan MacDonald Centre

Dr Chandran trained in medicine at Southampton University, and subsequently undertook neurology training at University College London Hospitals, The National Hospital for Neurology, London and Cambridge University Hospitals, Cambridge.

PhD from Cambridge (2000) was concerned with inter-species differences in the behaviour of neural stem cells.

Research

Dr Chandran is a clinical neurologist with a particular interest in why nerves die in diseases such as MND and MS and how we might develop treatments to slow, stop or reverse this process.

His research combines clinical activity with basic laboratory research. With NHS colleagues we will establish a specialist multidisciplinary MND clinic in Edinburgh that will serve both to improve patient care as well as promote research. The laboratory research is around human stem cells. Stem cells represent a terrific opportunity to both study and learn about disease as well as potentially develop new drugs and treatments.
