Centre researchers shed light on neuroprotective gene
A paper just published in the Journal of Neuroscience shows that it is possible to protect nerve-muscle synapses from degeneration by making small changes to a neuroprotective gene called WldS. Since neuromuscular junctions are among the first components of motor neurones to degenerate in MND, the researchers (a collaboration between Professor Richard Ribchester in the Euan MacDonald Centre and Dr Michael Coleman at the Babraham Institute) hope to find out whether and how this protection might eventually be used to slow down the progression of motor neurone disease.
