We would like to thank Hugh Kerr for raising money in aid of the Euan MacDonald Centre for MND Research by taking part in the Ironman Lanzarote on Saturday, 18th May 2013.
Hugh explains why his is taking on this gruelling challenge…
“Helen O’Hare was a close personal friend of mine for over twenty years. She was a warm, vibrant person who was never fazed by any difficulties that she encountered in life. Helen was also a wife, a mother of four to Lauren, Amy, Erin and Michael and a new grandmother. She absolutely thrived in this role.
In January 2008 Helen started the year like everyone else, planning for the year ahead, looking at holidays, what she was going to do with the family and looking forward to reducing her work commitment at Clive Ramsay’s food outlets. Helen had noticed that when she was drinking she was starting to lose some of her co-ordination and that she had weakness in her arms when lifting. Following medical assessment in hospital she was told on 1st May 2008 the devastating news that she had Motor Neurone Disease. The ensuing days were hellish as this was an aggressive form of the disease and Helen died but a few weeks later on 22nd May 2008, at home surrounded by her family. She was 42 years old. Only a week before she died Helen had organised a party at home because she wanted to celebrate her life with family and friends, despite being barely able to speak and unable to swallow. This is a measure of the type of person that Helen was. It was a fabulous party.
In Helen’s memory I am looking to raise funds for the Euan MacDonald Centre. Every penny raised will go directly to the centre. Every penny counts so please give what you can, no matter how much, it all helps.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your support.” – Hugh
